Biomarker Research and Inflammatory Diseases

According to a recent article by HealthDay News, an international team of scientists has identified new biomarkers that could help develop improved treatments for spondylarthritis (SpA).

SpA refers to a group of chronic autoimmune conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis and arthritis associated with psoriasis and inflammatory bowel diseases, primarily those affecting the peripheral joints.

In this study of 52 SpA patients, researchers identified the new biomarkers after analyzing tissue from the synovium, the thin membrane lining the joint space and the primary target of inflammation. The researchers found that changes in SpA disease activity are accompanied by a series of distinct and measurable events in synovial tissue.

Depression worse than Arthritis

In an article from the Irish Medical News by Niamh Mullen a comparison is made between suffering from Arthritis and the “stigma” of depression.

“There is a high level of stigma associated with depression amongst Irish people. A study by The Lundbeck Mental Health Barometer has revealed that people believe there is more stigma attached to mental health conditions than to other conditions.”

The study compared mental health with other illnesses.

Results show that schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety are perceived to have more stigma attached to them than conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Should You take Antibiotics for Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The Mayo Clinic has been using antibiotics to treat rheumatoid arthritis infections and preliminary results are now being published.

Researchers continue to explore the possibility that rheumatoid arthritis may be triggered by some form of infection. If true, it may be possible to prevent or stop the progression of the disease by taking an antibiotic.

However, studies of the usefulness of antibiotic therapy for rheumatoid arthritis have produced mixed results.
